Goldfrapp - Tales Of Us

A frequently beautiful return to form...
Goldfrapp - Tales Of Us

On the pair’s sixth studio album, Goldfrapp swings back to the sounds they first explored on 2008’s mercurial ‘Seventh Tree’ set.

Electro-glam is out. In its place, hushed ambience and a sack-load of reverb pedals are in.

These are delicate songs, Alison’s vocals rarely raised above a gentle whisper, but there’s an intriguing lyrical darkness there, too.

Will Gregory, meanwhile, does his best Scott Walker impression, bringing the strings and creating a haunting, nocturnal atmosphere.

‘Tales Of Us’ is relentlessly one note but frequently beautiful, and a welcome change from the theatrics of its immediate predecessor, 2010’s ‘Head First’. A return to form.

7/10
