Have the Canadian authorities liquidised the C86 compilation and force-fed it through their watering systems?
The country seems to cough up around eleven thousand indie bands fortnightly! New kids on the block Fjord Rowboat and their debut ‘Saved The Compliments For Morning’ sees the Maple Leafers stamp a further mark on the indie landscape. Sounding like fellow Canadians The Stills if they’d spent more time hiding behind their fringes and collecting shoegaze compilations, Fjord Rowboat’s debut is awash with delay-doused guitars and spatial, slow-burning melodies. With a voice which could be mistaken for the Doves’ Jimmy Goodwin, tracks like ‘Through The Morning Light’ and opener ‘Carried Away’ come on like a melodically aware Slowdive; towering soundscapes presumably implicating they spent their record advance cash buying up too many guitar pedals. Far from an immediate debut, more one that glides around the cranium with its dreamy organs and forefront strat layers.
Toronto; you really are spoiling us now.
