Fixers - We’ll Be The Moon
This Oxford band is a magnet for two pieces of over-used muso-speak: “experimental” and “genre-hopping”. The former is easily refuted: they sound too similar to the spaced-out likes of Animal Collective, MGMT et al to be considered innovators. As to the latter, this debut album does take some unexpected sonic detours, not least the ska-like bounce of ‘Crystals’, but you’d never mistake it for a mixtape. Nearly everything here would make a fitting soundtrack to some kind of entirely welcome paranormal experience. So, not terribly experimental then, nor especially genre-hopping, but let’s not be sniffy; it’s a very likeable cosmic pop record.
