Patchy, and showing little progression...
Ice On The Dune

Even when he was performing under the sobriquet of The Sleepy Jackson, Luke Steele - here performing as one-half of Antipodean duo, Empire Of The Sun - always had an eye for the more expansive side of pop.

And when ‘Ice On The Dune’ gets this balance of radio-friendly tunes and experimentation right, it’s punch-the-air fantastic.

Yet on too many occasions the duo - completed by Nick Littlemore of Pnau - veers too far towards well-worn dance-pop tropes. And, at their worst, Empire Of The Sun aren’t too far removed from the oeuvre of Calvin Harris.

As you might have guessed, ‘Ice On The Dune’ is patchy, and shows little progression from 2008 debut, ‘Walking On A Dream’.
