Having delivered one of 2011’s finer records as part of Real Estate, Matthew Mondanile fleshes out his other musical project from a previously solo endeavour into a convivial affair, backed by New Jersey band Big Troubles and featuring numerous guest performers. Sounding not especially unlike said fabulous Real Estate album, there are hints of The Go-Betweens’ superlative intelligent pop running through ‘The Flower Lane’, with its relentlessly breezy Eighties-guitar sound. A particular highlight is album midpoint, ‘Assistant Director’, which captures perfectly the squelchy, sleazy synth sound that oozes across certain tracks. While not breaking new sonic ground, the broad brush strokes of nostalgia rarely wilt.
