Don’t you just love it when albums start with a song you have to play over and over before advancing further?
The childlike lullaby refrain of “Welcome to the afterlife” is the first thing you’ll hear on CocoRosie’s fifth studio set, and its haunting, music-box chimes set the bar high.
Sisters Sierra and Bianca Casady trade off their contrasting delicate and acerbic vocal styles as the songs themselves, laced with pump-organ, piano and synth stabs, seem to do battle with the digital percussion.
It is a bewitching, beautiful album, with no two songs alike. Antony may put in a Johnson-less appearance, but he’s left in the shade by this remarkable duo.
