Big Boi – Boomiverse

A varied and undoubtedly welcome return from Daddy Fat Sacks...

As rap fans continue to pray that they might one day see an Andre 3000 solo album, the eccentric ATLien’s Outkast brethren Big Boi stays plugging the gap with his brand of energetic and bass-heavy hip-hop. Laced with complex rhyme styles and diverse lyrical content ‘Boomiverse’ is a welcomed return for Daddy Fat Sacks almost five years after his last album, 2012’s ‘Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors’.

Walking a thin line between pretty much every musical genre known to mankind, don’t be surprised when on ‘Boomiverse’ one minute you’re breaking your neck on a bed of 808s, electro drum patterns and screaming synths and the next you’re kicking back to a selection of funky rhythms, sax solos and acoustic guitars.

Big Boi’s Dungeon Family Padawan Killer Mike steals the show on more than one occasion and the album’s truly standout moment comes when he and Curren$y join Big on his first ever Mannie Fresh produced track, ‘Follow Me’.

With a plethora of guest spots adding some serious variety to the already sonically multifarious album, hearing Big Boi go back and forth with the likes of Kurupt, Snoop Dogg, Eric Bellinger, and even Adam Levine of Maroon 5, makes it all the more fun.

7/10
