The sleek pop majesty of latter-day Belle And Sebastian records smoothed away the loveably roughness of old, but certainly didn’t want for tunes.
Such consistency isn’t quite so evident on this second volume of flipsides.
Whereas 2005’s ‘Push Barman To Open Old Wounds’ collected a number of truly vital EPs, ‘The Third Eye Centre’ compiles B-sides from an era when nobody listened to them.
The Avalanches’ remix of ‘I’m A Cuckoo’ still sounds glorious, like a pacifist invasion from scouts and morris dancers.
‘Meat And Potatoes’, however, is every bit as unremarkable as its title implies, but even at its worst this hotchpotch collection is pleasant fare.
