Scottish indie group Frightened Rabbit have built up a solid reputation as heart wrenching songwriters.

Over the course of two albums Frightened Rabbit have gathered a cult following, with their gigs being spontaneous outpourings of emotion. Retreating to rural Scotland to craft their new album, the band are finally set to return after a gap of almost two years.

'The Winter Of Mixed Drinks' is due for release in March, with new single 'Swim Until You Can't See Land' already impressing on stereos across the land.

Frightened Rabbit unveiled several tracks from their forthcoming album on a recent UK tour. ClashMusic gave the band a camera, and told them to record the results.

This is what they came back with...

Marina and The Diamonds

Marina of Marina And The Diamonds - and, just so you know, she is the only proper member of Marina And The Diamonds - is reminiscing about her teens. “I was obsessed with being a singer, nothing else; totally obsessed,”’ she remembers with a smile on her face. “I would think about it every hour of every day for about five years until I was able to say to people, ‘OK, yeah, I’m going to do this with my life!’ And they would reply, ‘What? I’ve never heard you sing.’” She breaks into her lovely infectious laugh, probably because that childhood dream that people poured cold water on emerged unscathed. Now twenty-three, she’s about to take on the world with her first album; due to be released in January.

Marina is, quite frankly, adorable. And so charming, I can’t believe this is the same person who wrote on her blog that she hates socialising. She is tiny, even with her hair backcombed into a bouffant for our photoshoot, and has a natural, open charm that befits her music. With intimate, confessional songs, and her must-read blog about adventures in the music industry, you would think Marina was everyone’s best friend. Yet all this openness must take it out of her, right? “Yeah, sometimes with ‘I Am A Robot’ I just cringe like, I can’t believe I actually wrote that - I remember thinking as I wrote it, ‘Oh God, it’s so disgusting I’m writing this, because it’s totally exposed.’ But these are the songs that help people - the artists that I admire are really honest. They make you feel like you’re not alone at certain times in your life, so I’d like to be like that.”

Are her songs about real-life situations, then? “I’m not that inspired by love,” says Marina, decisively. “I guess when you break up you want to write about things but I haven’t had a lot of boyfriends. I don’t find people I really like very often.” Though she does admit to getting some material out of a break-up a couple of years ago, when she was twenty-one. “It took me a year and a half to get the songs out - it’s a bit embarrassing that it’s so long ago!”

Marina discovered her influences late, which might account for the distinctive quality of her singing voice. “I wasn’t taught how to sing and it wasn’t something that was natural to me. I’d never tried to sound like anybody and I never listened to music so that’s probably why.” She bursts out laughing; “Why am I here again? Why am I in this industry? I was only nineteen when I began to discover PJ Harvey, Fiona Apple, Patti Smith, and I’m sure they’ve influenced me in some way, but my parents never listened to anything cool - my mum listened to Kate Bush, and that’s the only reason I can think of why people start making comparisons.”

Her parents - Welsh mum, Greek dad, now divorced - are a constant touchstone, not least for her recent songwriting. “The album’s called ‘Family Jewels’ and I was just writing a lot about certain family members, namely my parents… My parents are truly inspiring people, and obviously they brought me up, and my feelings about life come from them. They’re very amazing people; when they say something, they act accordingly and they stick to their principles, and I really want to be like that.” Her dad came to see her July show at the Roundhouse in London. “He was really shocked,” says Marina, beaming. In a good way? “Yes,” she says, and starts laughing again, in that catchy, infectious way.

Sliimy Fashion Shoot

His popularity with French fashion bloggers and his cover of Britney’s ‘Womanizer’ has brought Sliimy a big following and a number two album in France. Clash caught up with him to talk pop, the Internet and how on Earth you pronounce Sliimy.

It’s ‘Slim-ee’, not slimy,” he laughs, obviously having heard it mispronounced more than a few times. “It was a nickname actually that my friends gave me because I was really skinny, like spaghetti. I just thought it sounded really pop.”

Sliimy is still incredibly slim, which when combined with his colourful pop style, a mass of tumbling curls and a kaleidoscope of pop tunes, could easily encourage comparisons with Mika. “Yeah, it’s someone that I like, someone in my big family of influence, but I think we’re quite different, we don’t have the same lives. Also, I think people presume we’re alike as we’re both these curly-haired guys and wear skinny jeans, but if people are really listening to the music they will see that it’s different.”

Twenty-year-old Sliimy, originally from St. Etienne but now living in Paris, is the latest musician to benefit from the internet boom. “My first composition was done at a home studio and I put this song on my MySpace.”

This, alongside his breathy, acoustic cover of ‘Womanizer’, which he posted on YouTube, were soon heard and loved by influential bloggers, such as the Fluo Kids and Perez Hilton, who signalled his online arrival to others. He’s also a fan of Lily Allen’s cover of the same song. “I heard it after [my version] and I was impressed by that also. I think that we’re really linked, you know. I really love her music; she’s so natural and she writes some trashy stuff. I love the way she speaks.”

Minimal, acoustic tracks showcased an incredibly smooth voice and an ear for a hook. His stripped-down style was lapped up by the pop world and he was soon supporting some of pop’s biggest princesses, including Britney Spears. “That was kinda different because we are of a different universe.

Her show is huge, there’s a lot of light, a lot of stuff going on, so when I just brought my acoustic guitar and my voice in front of seventeen thousand people, I was like, “Oh my God, it’s huge!” Other support slots have seen him onstage with Katy Perry and The Pussycat Dolls, about whom he laughs, realising the contrast between himself and the Dolls, and says, “I’m not gonna dance like that,” before demonstrating with an awkward and reserved imitation one of their more low-key dance steps.

With an infectious love of UK music and culture, Sliimy keeps reminding us how excited he is just to be in England. “I picked up music to try to escape this boring world for another way of life. The pop culture is different in England, you can’t do the same things in France, we don’t have the same vision of music. That’s why with this album I want to put a bit of my English touch as well as my French touch on it.”

During the shoot he coos over harlequin prints and gold-sequinned shirts. He explains that style is a big element of his personality. “In five years I could change completely; five years ago I did not look like this at all, but that’s life and you should just follow it. I don’t want to be stuck in one image.”

For now, that image is quirky, colourful and smart, topped off with a poppy stage name. But what exactly is his real name? “Oh,” he smiles, before singing: “it’s a secret!”

Noah And The Whale Tour Diary - Part One

Travel broadens the mind.

After releasing an album of breezy indie pop Noah And The Whale decided to hit the road, playing festivals up and down the country. Gaining a new found ambition, singer Charlie Fink's creative juices were set flooding after a traumatic break up.

Releasing their second album 'First Days Of Spring' earlier this year, Noah And The Whale stunned fans with the sheer confidence of their new material.

Vast in scope and dense in its emotional impact, the album ranks with the very best released in 2009. Taking their heartbreak on the road, Noah And The Whale recently toured the United States and took a Polaroid camera along with them.

Here's the results...

It’s 35 degrees and blue skies in Dubai.

Probably the perfect place for a November music festival. But, strangely, it’s probably some of the headliners’ idea of hell. Strict laws on drugs mean you could land in prison if caught with a grain of anything even remotely illegal, booze is only sold in controlled areas and anything featuring tits or arse is definitely out of the question.

Lady Sovereign Shoot & Interview

Lady Sovereign proves to Clash that she still rules, letting us in on her latest tracks, how she really feels about fashion and telling us just what happened to all her old tracksuits…

Yeah,” says Lady Sovereign decisively, whilst hair and make-up ladies primp and preen her teeny-tiny frame for the final picture of the Clash photoshoot, “I am gonna go to football with my make-up on - fuck it.”

Ms. Sovereign you see, has just become a member of Leyton Ladies FC - two weeks after getting back into competitive football following an eight-year absence, due to y’know, being a worldwide music phenomenon and that. “I’ve still got it!” she grins. We ask what team she’s playing tonight. “I’m not sure… but I think we’ll win.” Well, we wouldn’t expect anything less. As well as throwing herself football spikes-first back into the beautiful game, Louise Harman is also three songs into her third album, the follow up to April’s ‘Jigsaw’.

One of them, you’ll be interested and maybe a tad bemused to know, takes its inspiration from ’90s Britrock icon, Skin. “I’ve been listening to a lot of Skunk Anansie recently,” explains Sovereign. “I completely forgot about her and then I stumbled across it again, and I was like, ‘Oh my God’, I forgot how good she is.” She decided to investigate when a friend name-checked the band in a Facebook status update, even though she admits that it’s the type of music she wouldn’t have given the time of day to when she was younger and feeding her ears on a strict diet of garage and rap. But now, happily, her taste in music had broadened, meaning she’s also giving things like Depeche Mode a chance. “I’d have never listened to that ten years ago, ever, but I think it’s genius now.”

One of the three new tracks also features Sovereign singing, something she started experimenting with on ‘Jigsaw’. “I felt comfortable doing it at home and that was the same way I come across rapping,” says Sovereign, who admits that it took a smidgen of alcoholic lubrication the first time she decided to unleash her inner Mariah Carey down the studio.

‘Jigsaw’ came out on her own Midget Records after she parted ways with Def Jam last year. “Right now it’s just for me,” she says when we ask if she’s considering signing anyone else to it, but she isn’t ruling out the possibility, and tells us she’s keeping an eye on The Binary Kids, an electrosonic party-hop duo she took with her on her recent UK tour.

What with this being a fashion shoot, we feel we should ask Sovereign about her style… “D’ya know what - I just get dressed, honestly, I just get dressed, sometimes I’m like late with fashion or whatever, I don’t really…” she lowers her voice, about to drop a fashionista-slaying bombshell, “care too much.” She does, though, have her “wild days”, but these tend to happen when she’s over in the US. “When I’m in America I feel a bit more loose in the way I dress… I feel like over here people look at you a bit more and judge you, but in America it’s just like they’ll look at you, but they won’t say anything.” When something really needs saying though, Sovereign will step up, including to take to task her old look, when she used to wear tracksuits ten sizes too big. She looks suitably embarrassed. “I chucked ’em away,” she gulps. “I didn’t even give them to charity, I just chucked them away.” At least however, she never wore a Muppet. Unlike Lady Gaga. “That friggin’ Kermit the Frog thing she wore, I’m sorry but it made me just die of laughter.”

Die? Not likely - Sovereign’s heart is evidently beating as hard and fast as it ever was.

American newcomers Passion Pit recently hit the UK - and took some photos exclusively for ClashMusic!

Famously formed after a Valentines Gift spiralled out of control, Passion Pit have a rare gift for connecting with audiences. Taking the dreamy synth pop of MGMT and extending it outwards, debut album 'Manners' arrived with a hefty dollop of hype.

Effortlessly blending electronic elements with lovelorn songwriting the band won rave reviews. Live, Passion Pit are something quite special capable of extending their material out into blistering electronic outbursts.

Returning to the UK recently the band took a camera along for the ride. The results show what life is like in one of the year's most tipped breakthrough acts - rarely glamourous but always entertaining.

Look at the results now...

Chairlift Gallery & Interview

Brooklyn trio Chairlift operate in the same musical and experimental playground as MGMT and Yeasayer but their mash of sounds is unmistakably their own. Clash talks to the three-piece about haunted houses, garbage and that iPod ad.

“I think our dream is to be the first band to play a concert on Mars,” states Aaron of Brooklyn-based trio Chairlift. “The problem is Patrick won’t go, he’s afraid of space.” Drummer Patrick confirms that any intergalactic gigs would have to be sans-percussion, “I’m afraid of heights and space so I’m going to stay on planet Earth my entire life.”

Though this may sound like an appropriately ‘kooky’ comment from a band that produced the so-sweet-you’ll-get-a-toothache iPod ad track ‘Bruises’ (“I tried to do handstands for you…”) you would be mistaken to judge them by their cover. Debut album, ‘Does You Inspire You’, is an appetising mix of the childlike and the spacey, with an underlying creepiness mixed in. Vocalist and synth-player Caroline’s honeyed vocals fluctuate between hushed naivety and impassioned wails. Some tracks feature space-rock synths, computer game beeps and beats that click and tick. Others have country melodies or thumping bass, all of which melt into an intriguing sound that’s hard to pin down, but at the same time strikingly recognisable.

The band members too are a mixture of timidity and enthusiasm with an undertone of mischief. Both Caroline and Aaron have fresh marker pen chains and initials emblazoned up their arms. Aaron is also sporting a faded design that states ‘Totally True’, the instant answer to the inevitable question: ‘Is it true you used to write music for haunted houses?’

In the band’s early days, Caroline and Aaron’s practice sessions would descend into the realm of the strange and unusual, which inspired plans for a haunted house tour. “We came up with everything,” says Aaron, “except we didn’t actually do it.” These early sessions slipped into their debut, but Caroline cites the source of their underlying creepy vibe as “a juxtaposition between things that are supposed to be comforting but aren’t and things that are very normal.”

Modern life is also part of the mix of influences. ‘Earwig Town’ is a skin crawling exploration of surveillance and the ‘your-call-may-be-recorded’ aspect of everyday life, while ‘Garbage’ is a reflection on the reuse and recycle mantra of the band’s home state, Colorado. Despite their move to Brooklyn, human waste is still an inspiring notion. “The idea of all our garbage sitting in a landfill longer than we’ll even be alive was actually kind of a beautiful idea to me,” says Caroline, “like the real tombstone we leave behind, it’s beautiful in that kind of normal/creepy way that I like.”

‘Bruises’ may have elicited a surge of interest in the band, with some fans attending gigs only for that song, but Chairlift find that reaction humorous and Aaron has even compiled a screenshot collection of online comments referring to it. “Thirteen-year-old girls write, ‘I only like ‘Bruises’ and the rest of the album is like eeeewwwwww’ - I think that’s my favourite one.” Surprised at how much the commercial has worn off, Patrick says he’s happy with how quickly people have gotten into the band’s repertoire as a whole, though. “I thought we’d have a long battle trying to become more than the band that was on the iPod commercial.”

With their popularity on the rise, Chairlift’s thoughts turn to a new album. Tracks are composed and at the ready, and the band is excited about taking on a production role. They’re even thinking about recording in the desert. Before that though, they have a heavy touring schedule to complete. Mars may not be on the tour yet, but Caroline is still looking skywards. “Mars would be fun, but I think I’d rather play a show on the Moon so you can look at Earth. I think we’d have more of a draw there anyway.”

Kitsune is one of the coolest labels on the planet.

Mixing dance with rock, Britain with Europe, the United States and everywhere else the label has broken new ground with each release.

Currently, two British groups are making waves on the label. Two Door Cinema Club have only released a handful of singles yet already their danceable electro pop is turning heads across the continent.

Manchester band Delphic, meanwhile, do what Manchester bands seem to do best. Effortlessly blending dance with rock they recall New Order at their ground breaking height without losing their own distinct voice.

Joining up for a recent high profile tour, Two Door Cinema Club and Delphic learned to live out each other's pockets for weeks at a time. ClashMusic gave Two Door Cinema Club a camera and prepared ourselves for the shocking truth of life on the road with Kitsune...

The Raveonettes

Sune wears T-shirt by Topman, trousers by Paul And Joe Men, shoes by Barratts." />

The Raveonettes

“In a way we’re sort of an awful live band,” starts Sharin Foo, the girl half of The Raveonettes. “I think the music sounds great but…”

“It’s probably boring to watch us play,” finishes off her bandmate Sune Rose Wanger - owner of not just the boy-shaped side of proceedings, but also of possibly the greatest name in modern music.

With their new ‘pop’ album ‘In And Out Of Control’, the Danish duo have been drastically rethinking their shtick, revamping their fuzzed-up trashy-chic sonics and their stage show. “We came to terms with [the fact] that we’re now officially entertainers,” explains Wagner. “We always thought that we were just artists.” Foo giggles.

Their fourth album sees them handing over the reigns to a producer for the first time, fellow Dane and Junior Senior knob twiddler Thomas Troelson. “We wanted someone to be really different from us, which he is,” says Foo. Their last album, ‘Lust Lust Lust’, might have been, in Foo’s words “very dark and introvert”, but they’ve perked up thanks to Troelson, to whom ‘upbeat’ is far from a dirty word. So, that explains the ‘Out Of Control’ bit of the record title - how about the ‘In Control’ part? Well, that’s simple. After eight years in the industry, The Raveonettes are clearer than they’ve ever been about what they want and what they need. “We were a little burned out at one point just from touring too much and partying too much and now we’re in a good healthy place, we’re very focused on the music,” admits Foo. So, there’s no partying any more? “There’s still parties, but for me, not so much, I have a little daughter. She’s eleven months old.”

- - -

The Raveonettes - 'Last Dance'

- - -

Partying is also made harder by the fact that The Raveonettes are a bicoastal band. Sharin lives in Los Angeles, while Sune is in New York City. How does that work? “It doesn’t,” laughs Wagner. “We meet each other like this,” he says putting his hands up, “it’s crazy!” Foo is LA based for reasons of romance, and it seems Wanger is having a love affair too, not with a person, but a city. “When I lived in Copenhagen I was extremely restless, I would go out every night and I just couldn’t find peace because I was afraid that I was gonna miss something.” Then, when he moved to his beloved NYC that restless feeling vanished. “All of a sudden I had the feeling that I wasn’t going to miss out on anything because if I didn’t go out tonight it would be the same, or twice as much tomorrow or the day after.”

You’ll never find The Raveonettes living in Las Vegas though, where they recently played a one-off show. One day there, confesses Wagner, is more than enough, recalling the time he spent two weeks in the city, not leaving his hotel once. “That was good inspiration for some evil songs. I really thought I had found Hell on Earth.”

Sonically - if not lyrically - that evil has abated on the new album. Gone are the lurid pulp fiction and monochrome film noir influences. “This is not a cinematic album for us,” laughs Wagner. So, what was the inspiration? “Real life. A lot of stuff that we experience in our personal lives, and, unfortunately, I guess it’s like that when you, er... I don’t like the term ‘get older’, so I’ll say when you ‘progress in life’, you experience more and more tragic things. Life is painful, misery… I guess we have to one day maybe sit down and write a really happy pop song. One day we’ll do it, why not?” Remember to give us a call when you do guys - we’d love to hear it.

Maximo Park - Tour Diary

When you ask Paul Smith to compose a tour diary, you don't expect the Maximo Park to return with the usual snaps of sweating roadies.

Putting the same taste for observation into his photographs as he does with lyrics the singer has crafted a unique memento of the band's recent UK tour.

Finishing a spectacular year Maximo Park played a final trio of shows across the UK. Taking in dates at London's Royal Albert Hall as well as jaunts to Manchester and Glasgow, the shows found the band on terrific form.

Taking time out to record some special moments for ClashMusic, Paul Smith managed to show us just what it feels like to head out on tour with Maximo Park.

"On tour, I try to pick up on the smaller details. Here are a few of the sights that caught my eye on our latest three UK dates, from derelict buildings to delicate decorations" - Paul Smith.
