White Rabbits Chat To ClashMusic

Ahead of their London show...

White Rabbits have answered a few of our questions ahead of their show in London tonight (August 13th).

White Rabbits famously come to the fore in a live environment. The band's twin drum attack makes for a thrilling experience, with their demented indie rock squall pushed to the absolute brink.

The band are set to play London's Hoxton Bar & Kitchen tonight (August 13th) and the intimate capital venue is in for quite a night. Fresh from the release of 'Milk Famous', White Rabbits are on feral form, coaxing out new single 'I'm Not Me' for release on September 10th.

Flushed with excitement, ClashMusic emailed over a few questions to singer Stephen Patterson, who kindly replied.

Do you view what happens live / what happens in the studio as separate entities?
It depends on the song, but for the most part, yes I do. I tend to get bored with records that just sound like a band in a room so we usually play around with odd sounds and arrangements, most of which are kinda hard to pull off live. So when we start promoting a record, it's a challenge trying to figure out how to make these studio creations work on stage. It's important though to not get hung up on pulling off a studio recording perfectly in a live setting. We did that for a while and realized that we completely lost the concept of playing live music. Just make it work in the moment you're in, it really doesn't matter if it's different than the recording.

How did it feel to get back on the road after the process behind ‘Milk Famous’?
It's honestly been more difficult than ever. This is the best batch of songs we've ever put together, but they're not easy to pull off live.

‘I’m Not Me’ is the new single, what inspired that?
Musically it was inspired by Nick Lowe's first record and Elvis Costello's cover of So Young. Lyrically it was inspired by a real grade A asshole.

‘We’re All Restless’ is the B-side, when was that written?
It was written after the main sessions we did in Austin last summer. Alex and I put it together in a few days. Vocally driven songs were just sounding very silly to us so we ended up with that pseudo-instrumental track. It's kind of in the same vein as the song 'Milk Famous' which was also released as a b-side. Honestly I think those two tracks are some of the best stuff this band has ever recorded. We tried to fit them onto the album actually but they didn't work, I guess.
