Tyler, The Creator has scooped the MTV VMA Award for 'Best New Artist' in a lavish ceremony.

Well, well. Erupting out of California last year, Odd Future have enjoyed a meteoric rise. Barely out of their teens, the hip hop collective have toured the world seemingly irritating everyone in their path.

With both the GLAAD and Steve Albini united in their disgust, the decision to nominate high profile MC Tyler, The Creator for a VMA Award did not go un-noticed.

Nominated for 'Best New Artist' and 'Video Of The Year' Tyler, The Creator was sat alongside some globally recognised stars. Yet despite tough competition, the fan-led 'Best New Artist' trophy is now firmly in his grasp.

Sitting beside his mother when the winner was announced, Tyler, The Creator seemed jubilant as he rushed onstage. Grabbing the statue from presenters Taylor Lautner and Selena Gomez, the rapper was joined by several other members of Odd Future in making an expletive laden acceptance speech.

"Yo, I'm excited as fuck right now, yo," he said. "I wanted this shit since I was nine. I'm about to cry. This is for my little brother Earl (Sweatshirt). He's not here right now. I really can't believe I'm here right now. I didn't write a thank you speech. I don't know. Fuck. To all the kids watching, you can do this shit. Thank you."

Tyler, The Creator beat off competition from Kreayshawn, Foster The People, Big Shaun and Wiz Khalifa.

Missing out on the 'Video Of The Year' gong - it went to Katy Perry - Tyler, The Creator caused a stir shortly before the ceremony. Asked what he would do if Bruno Mars beat him, the rapper replied: "I might kill myself."
