More than ten years on from the legendary "Help" album this new record may well be the charity's most ambitious project yet. The idea for behind "Heroes" is that some of the most legendary names in modern music nominate a contemporary artist to cover one of their songs.
Amongst the legends asked to nominate someone are Bob Dylan, The Clash and Joy Division. Although the full tracklisting has yet to be released, Clashmusic.com can confirm that Duffy is set to cover Sir Paul McCartney's "Live And Let Die" while Hot Chip will cover Joy Division's anthem "Transmission".
The album is a an international affair, and will also contain Beck covering Dylan's mid 60s epic "Leopard Skin PIllbox Hat" while Rufus Wainwright will cover tracks from Brian Wilson's "Smile" project. A close friend of Clashmusic.com has been invited, with The Kooks set to cover The Kinks' "Victoria".
As with the "Help" album, the cover for heroes has been designed by former Stones Roses guitar slinger John Squire. All profits will go to War Child, a charity which helps children affects by war around the world.
Currently, War Child is the only child protection agency still operating in southern Iraq as well a numerous other theatres of war around the world. Let's leave the final word to Sir Paul McCartney:
"I have been supporting War Child since 1995. Their work with children in war zones saves lives and their work with those who take decisions that help them to do something about it saves even more lives. I think Duffy's version of 'Live And Let Die' is great - I was really impressed. The breadth of talent on this project is amazing; it's great that so many people gave their time, energy and support to this initiative. I urge everyone to support War Child."
"War Child: Heroes" will be released on February 16th.
