New album planned

Dancehall legend Vybz Kartel is preparing to release his new album this summer.

Dancehall is a strange beast. While other genres of Jamaican music - ska, reggae, Lovers Rock - have achieved international success the sounds of Dancehall have remained largely trapped in Jamaica.

In some ways adding to its potency, dancehall has produced a few crossover artists of late. Renowned MC and all round soundsystem legend Vybz Kartel has worked with a few big name producers, and is now set to return with his new album.

Releasing a string of vital cuts, tracks such as 'Clarks' established Vybz Kartel as an inventive rapper. An ode to his favourite type of shoes, the Jamaican star has that magic touch which turns the most mundane of subject matter into something special.

Still best known as the voice from 'Pon De Floor' Vybz Kartel has been working on something special. Teaming up with Dre Skull, the rapper began work on new material in Brooklyn last year.

Forging a new sound for dancehall, the pair received a blast of ambition. Perhaps the first concept album in the history of dancehall, Vybz Kartel has kept true to his roots for 'Kingston Story'.

Due for release this summer, the album both expands the dancehall format and re-visits Vybz Kartel's early cuts. Taken from the record, new single 'Go Go Wine' the first blast of new material from the Brooklyn sessions.

Set to premiere shortly, the single will drop on May 2nd. Apparently an accessible introduction to the ambitious new project, 'Go Go Wine' will launch an important year for Vybz Kartel.

With the appreciation of his peers ringing in his ears, the MC will be aiming to finally crack the mainstream and let dancehall get the appreciation it deserves. The question remains, though - will he succeed?

Vybz Kartel is due to release 'Go Go Wine' on May 2nd.
