Digital Abduction

Tron Legacy Trailer

In the visually groundbreaking original, hacker turned arcade owner Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) sets out to prove that a dastardly rival has stolen his game designs and is taking the credit. Whilst attempting an audacious hack in order to retrieve them he’s digitally abducted, transformed into a data stream and sucked into a spectacular cyber world of luminescent landscapes composed of neon circuitry and gladiatorial challenges.

Teaming up with Tron (in the real world a security programmer named Bradley, alter egos & all that, keep up people) the two conspire to defeat the nefarious Master Control Programme (i.e. baddie who’d stolen Flynns designs). Back in the days when little boys peed their pants over Atari, the graphics in this were jaw droppingly good and provided our first glimpse into filmic cyberspace; now a universally accepted concept. So it will be interesting to see if they have relatively upped the ante and if it will constitute similar breakthroughs in digital post production. As it comes from the Disney stable and has had a serious amount of money thrown at it one would expect so.

So after much viral activity, bootleg trailers and fanboy musings here is the official trailer for the 3D sequel ‘Tron Legacy’. In it we see Flynn’s son Sam (Garrett Hedlund) go in search of his missing father, 25 year after he disappeared into the game. Bruce Boxleitner reprises his role as Bradey (Tron) and the newly crowned King of the Oscars, Bridges is back as Flynn senior. Expect stunning set pieces and state of the art effects, father & son re-unification and perhaps even a meditation on the tangible versus the cyber world? As ‘Avatar’ proved 3D animation is a definite draw and as we’re all better geared up for techy porn these days no doubt this film will reach a much larger audience than its predecessor.

It won’t be out for another nine months so expect a trumped up pre Christmas release, a surge of Light Cycle inspired merchandising and a soundtrack produced by French robotocists Daft Punk. Watch this space.
