Track Of The Day 8/11 – Jono McCleery

'Ingenue'

Jono McCleery's music seems to emerge gradually from the ether.

A soft, beguiling voice, the fragility of his delivery is matched to the emotional impact of albums such as debut 'Darkest Light' and follow up 'There Is'.

Arranging a flurry of UK shows, Jono McCleery decided to record a new version of a song that has haunted him for a long time.

'Ingenue' appears on the Atoms For Peace record, a project that united Thom Yorke, Flea, Nigel Godrich, and Joey Waronker.

Jono explains: "The chorus melody was the first thing that hit me about this track, and was instantly stuck in my head all day long… in a good way. Then as I began to learn the song the lyrics became more symbolic, particularly the lyric 'Seeds of a dandelion blow away…’ – the notion of letting go, the idea that hope is fragile, and that dreams and intentions shouldn't be discounted just because they don't come true or meet their end goal. Even if the seeds blow nowhere, the fact they existed makes them as important as any."

"Normally I cover songs which tend to be quite old but this time I wanted to try something more recent," he continues. "I've always been a big fan of Thom Yorke's singing and writing so I was compelled to try and do something of his."

A beautifully recorded rendition, 'Ingenue' is stripped down to the core, with the floating harmonium drone underpinning Jono's vibrant delivery. As for what he's planning next, fans can expect some live shows, with a new album dotted on the horizon.

He explains: "I will play a small run of UK shows with my band at the end of November, after that I'll be sitting tight waiting for the album to come out early next year, so that I can tour as much possible!"
