Track Of The Day 19/8 - Nick Brewer

Fun (Elli Ingram Refix)
Nick Brewer

The rich get richer, the poor get poorer.

Despite assurances to the contrary, it can sometimes be difficult to believe that the British economy is bouncing back. Opportunities for young people are thin on the ground, with places at university now held at a premium and competition for jobs getting tougher and tougher.

Hip hop has always accurately reflected the mood of the streets. So it comes as no surprise, then, to discover the dolorous, downbeat, introspective rhymes of Essex native Nick Brewer.

Introducing himself via last year's mixtapes Alone With My Thoughts 1 & 2, the vocalist was backed by thick, syrupy production from the Confectionary. New EP 'Flat 10' continues this mixture of languid, grey-flecked beats and bittersweet vocals.

As a preview, though, Clash are able to offer you something special. Rising songwriter Elli Ingram released her track 'Fun' earlier this year, a gently etched, beautifully wrought piece of music.

Cutting apart the arrangement with the Confectionary, Nick Brewer then adds his own rhymes, gently skipping between the vocals.

Introducing the track, Nick Brewer said: "I'd recently been recommended Elli Ingram's new EP by a friend and I loved it. She's got a wicked voice and I love how honest and open she is in her lyrics. Fun is my favourite track from the EP, so I thought it would be cool to do my own little refix with my producers; The Confect, and here it is."

Listen to it now.

'Flat 10' is set to be released on September 15th. Nick Brewer is set to play EASTnotEAST at London venue Birthdays on September 4th - details.
