The lines between pop and the underground have become blurred.
These days, it often seems that to have any chance at all of commercial success a single needs to come wrapped with an awareness of electronic music. With Jessie Ware and Katy B leading the way, we seem to entering an era where underground performers have a credible shot at the charts – and visa versa.
Eli & Fur crossed paths as teenagers, downloading mixes and swapped ideas. Debut release ‘Sea Of Stars’ emerged earlier this year, all shimmering production, seductive vocals and a sweet pop tip that was difficult to deny.
Now the pair are itching to make their next move. Out next Monday (November 26th) via the duo’s own NYX Records imprint, ‘Tonight’ is a real statement of ambition.
Sitting on top of a 4/4 beat, Eli & Fur match glossy synths against a distorted bass weight. Easier to catch than a November cold, the chorus comes pounding through with the gravitas of Robyn or Niki & The Dove.
Expanded to include remixes from house don Jimmy Edgar and Breton (under their BretonLABS moniker) ‘Tonight’ kicks against the fading winter sun.
