Tom Odell has fought off competition from AlunaGeorge and Laura Mvula to win the BRIT Critics Choice award for 2013.
The Critics Choice award is an indicator of where the music industry thinks the market will progress over the next year. It might not be the most cutting edge, underground statement around but it does, if nothing else, demonstrate where the more commercial end of British music will no doubt travel.
Earlier this year, the panel unveiled their shortlist for 2013. AlunaGeorge, Laura Mvula and Tom Odell were named on the final list, with all hoping to follow in the footsteps of last year's winner Emile Sande. In the end, Tom Odell has claimed the prize in the process becoming the first male artist to win the Critics Choice award.
The London based artist was stunned by the news, commenting: "I'm thrilled and honoured to win the Brits critics' choice award. I genuinely can't believe it. Looking at the list of amazing female artists who have won the award already, I just hope I don't let the boys down."
