The xx have claimed their first number one, with ‘Coexist’ entering the charts in pole position.

The xx may have notched up the Mercury Music Prize with their celebrated debut album, but its success was gradual, insidious. A slow burning effort, the band’s follow up ‘Coexist’ is buoyed by similar subtleties and inflections.

Yet this time round, The xx are a far bigger proposition. Released to near unanimous acclaim, ‘Coexist’ immediately raced to the top of the charts with pre-order sales pushing the album to number one on the mid week countdown.

Fighting off competition from The Script, The xx have now landed the first number one of their career. ‘Coexist’ has notched up pole position in its first week of release, with The Script and Bob Dylan left in its wake.

Elsewhere on the albums chart, Coldplay push their way back up to number four with ‘Mylo Xyloto’ following their high profile spot on the Paralympic Games closing ceremony. Last week’s chart toppers The Vaccines slide down to number six, one space ahead of Two Door Cinema Club with ‘Beacon’.

Pet Shop Boys sit at number nine, while Plan B’s Mercury nominated soundtrack album ‘iLL Manors’ remains at number ten.

Rejuvenated American boogie merchants ZZ Top released their new studio album ‘La Futura’ during the week, hitting number 29 on the charts. Elsewhere, David Byrne and Annie Clark’s collaborative effort ‘Love This Giant’ slides into the countdown at number 40.

This week’s Top Ten albums are:

1. The xx – Coexist
2. The Script - #3
3. Bob Dylan – Tempest
4. Coldplay – Mylo Xyloto
5. Emili Sande – Our Version Of Events
6. The Vaccines – Come Of Age
7. Two Door Cinema Club – Beacon
8. Joe McElderry – Here’s What I Believe
9. Pet Shop Boys – Elysium
10. Plan B – iLL Manors OST
