The White Stripes Sales Surge

Following their recent split

The White Stripes are flying back up the charts after experiencing a massive sales surge.

The White Stripes were doing nothing new. A garage rock combo with a blues influence, the band sat nicely in the Detroit lineage founded by The MC5 and cared for so lovingly by The Gories.

Yet the duo had an enticing chemistry, a feeling of being alive which flooded through their music. Third album 'White Blood Cells' shattered expectations of what a guitar was for, ending a series of maudlin singer-songwriters who were better off back on the dole queue.

Harsh but fair... Despite doing very little since 2007 the split of The White Stripes still came as a shock. An announcement on their official website took fans by surprise, with many harbouring hopes of an allusive new album.

The last thing the duo released was the tour documentary 'Under The Great White Northern Lights'. Following the band on their Canadian tour, it shows a really personal, human side to The White Stripes.

According to Amazon the album and documentary package has received a sales increase of 2,644%. Elsewhere, 'White Blood Cells' is up 612% while breakthrough album 'Elephant' is at 402%.

One of the decade's most influential and best loved groups, new fans must be wondering where to start. ClashMusic would advise you to begin the way most of us began - grabbing 'White Blood Cells' and move outwards.

An undoubtedly seminal album, it caught the British press on a slow news day. With little else to report, John Peel's assertion that it was the most exciting thing since Hendrix bizarrely made a full page spread in The Mirror.

Heady days...
