The Stooges' Ron Asheton Found Dead

Rumours of guitarist's demise true...

Rumours on the internet this afternoon of the death of The Stooges' guitarist Ron Asheton have proven true.

Numerous forums across the Internet have posts carrying the news, despite a lack of any official announcement. The posts claim a heart attack as cause of death and note a bottle of vodka at the scene.

A little investigating from Clash pulled out an article confirming his death. It reads:

"Famed rock-and-roll guitarist and longtime Ann Arbor resident Ronald 'Ron' Asheton was found dead in his home on the city's west side this morning, police said.

"Officers went to the home on Highlake Avenue at around midnight and discovered Asheton's body on a living-room couch. He appeared to have been dead for at least several days, Stanford said.

"Detective Sgt. Jim Stephenson said the cause of death is undetermined but investigators do not suspect foul play. Autopsy and toxicology results are pending."

Asheton, 60, was an original member of The Stooges, fronted by Iggy Pop and featuring Ron's brother Scott, and played on their last album, 2007's 'The Weirdness'. They formed in Ann Arbor in 1967 and have been hailed as garage-rock pioneers, and were recently nominated for inclusion in the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame.

Rest in peace...

Ah... My fondest Stooge

Ah... My fondest Stooge memory is seeing them at SXSW 2007, when our creative business manager got on stage to dance with Iggy during 'No Fun'. You can see him busting some Bez-like moves 2:43 in. He's the lanky one in black.
