Seminal London nightspot The End is set to close its doors on January 24th, it has been announced.

An influential tastemaker in the London music scene, nightclub The End has kept the kids dancing for over a decade since it opened on December 1st 1995. Although it catered for all tastes, The End is primarily known as the home of Erol Alkan's legendary clubnight Trash, which is where Alkan established a reputation which has seen him rise to become one of the most prominent DJs in the UK.

As well as clubnights, The End has also promoted gigs by a number of illustrious acts. Amongst those who treaded the boards at The End include Peaches, Har Mar Superstar and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Speaking to Music Week, the club's founders explained that the decision to close was based more on personal motives than financial. "We’ve had offers for the club before, and yes, this was the best one but I wouldn’t say that it’s so good that it makes this a purely financial issue – it’s a circumstantial issue, coupled with financial. If it was seven or eight years ago, an offer like this wouldn’t have been accepted. It’s a lot to do with the timing... There are other members of staff who have been here for ten or eleven years, and we’ve got to the point where some of the key people are ready to move on."

The End will have its closing down weekend on January 23rd / 24th.
