As new album hits the shops
New York punk-funk outlaws !!! have spoken about their intimidating reputation as a live band.
Few bands have such an imposing stature of a live experience than !!!. At times almost tribal, the New York outfit's future-primitivism expands with an audience to become something visceral yet brutal.
Losing drummer Jerry Fuchs last year, the band vowed to continue with recent shows demonstrating a renewed energy. !!! recently released their new album 'Strange Weather, Isn't It?' to widespread acclaim.
Yet still some fans insist that the band can only be experienced live. Speaking to ClashMusic, !!! frontman Nic Offer gave his thoughts on that view.
“I think people generally consider our live shows better than the albums,” he concedes. “But we really love being in a studio; our records are all layered pretty densely. But… bands like The Stooges sure put on a better live show than any record they ever made, but the records are still really good.”
Signed to Warp, !!! are one of the most groundbreaking rock groups out there, mixing tribal rhythm with Krautrock, post-punk with electronica. 'Strange Weather, Isn't It?' is one of their most effective statements yet, matching rock guitars to dance beats.
Speaking to ClashMusic, Nic Offer explained that the mixture was initially rejected by punk fans. “It was shocking to punk fans that we were going to make them dance" claimed the singer.
"We used to get into loads of trouble, because we were screaming at them to dance. Now we have them from the start.”
