Stereolab Confirm New Album
Due on November 16th
Seminal American psych-pop outfit Stereolab are set to release new album 'Not Music' on November 16th.
Stereolab are almost impossible to classify. Their music moves through huge stylistic shifts, with the band's recorded output moving from glistening psych-pop to exotica, electronic and plenty more.
At times singing in different languages, Stereolab have always sought to defy convention. Recently the band have begun operating in France, developing a home studio in the Southern city of Bordeaux.
Using their French base Instant Zero to construct their 2008 album 'Chemical Chords' it seems that these same sessions will form the basis of their new album.
Due for release later this year, 'Not Music' is a typically inventive recording. The band worked from rhythm tracks upwards, experimenting with up to seventy drum loops before constructing the actual songs.
Singer Tim Gane revealed that Stereolab began by using “a series of about seventy tiny drum loops” on top of improvised chord sequences using piano and vibraphone. “Building them up from there – later slowing the tracks down or speeding them up – a totally new way of doing songs for us…”
The band's twelfth studio album to date, the release comes as Stereolab come to grips with a self-imposed hiatus. The group have no intentions to write or record new music, and will not be touring the new album.
Released via Stereolab's own Duophonic UHF Discs, the song titles are typically hallucinogenic. 'So Is Cardboard Clouds' and 'Everybody's Weird Except Me' share space with 'Two Finger Symphony'.
Currently numbering seven people, don't go expecting Stereolab to be touring any time soon...
