Mercury Music Prize winner Speech Debelle has spoken about her stunning victory at last night's ceremony, revealing she wants to work with Kings Of Leon.

Once again the Mercury panel have body-swerved public opinion. Bookies had Florence & The Machine down as favourites, with acts such as Glasvegas, The Horrors and more not far behind.

However it was little known rapper Speech Debelle who scooped the prize. Emerging from the celebrations the diminutive MC seemed over-awed by the occasion, and the scale of her achievement.

Released earlier this year, 'Speech Therapy' was a startling debut. Ignoring recent hip hop trends Debelle employed an almost jazz-like palette of samples, with guest appearances from the likes of Roots Manuva.

Speaking to NME after the ceremony the rapper claimed to be struggling to take in the shock turn of events. Speech Debelle revealed that former Mercury winner Ms Dynamite was an early inspiration for her.

“Ms Dynamite was an inspiration for me,” she said. “She looks like me, she talks like me, she made me think, ‘Oh, I could do this’.”

Asked about where she could go in the future, Speech Debelle claimed that she wanted to work with one of the biggest names in indie rock. “One of my favourite bands is Kings Of Leon", the London rapper stated.

”So hopefully I'm going to work with them. I don't know if I could handle Kanye West, too mouthy" she joked.

Meanwhile London mayor Boris Johnson has praised Speech Debelle for her victory in the Mercury Music Prize. Writing on Twitter he said: "Congratulations to Speech Debelle on the Mercury Prize! Great to see a South Londoner showing off the amazing talent in this city!"
