First new material in 30 years

Sly Stone is to return with 'I'm Back! Family & Friends' his first new album in 30 years.

At a time when the United States were more divided than ever, Sly Stone led a group which was multi-racial and multi-gender. Partying down the boundaries, Sly & The Family Stone burst out of California with a series of enormous hit singles.

Arguably soundtrack American life for around five years, Sly & The Family Stone gave one of the most memorable performances at Woodstock. One of the few black acts on the bill, the funkateers responded with some fantastic jams.

However it couldn't last: the band soon splintered, and Sly Stone was left to nurse a drug addiction as he attempted to complete the famously fried 'There's A Riot Going On'.

Disappearing from public life, the producer released two solo albums with the last - 'Ain't But The One Way' - coming in 1982. Last making a public appearance at Lovebox in 2007, Sly Stone had been thought lost.

Now the American music icon has confirmed his return. 'I'm Back! Family & Friends' mixes new versions of his best known tracks with three brand new cuts.

Amongst the guest stars on the forthcoming album is Jeff Beck, who contributes to a new version of '(I Want To Take You) Higher'. Meanwhile fellow bluesman Johnny Winter appears on 'Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Again)' while Ann Wilson duets on 'Everyday People'.

The Doors keyboard player Ray Manzarek is called into action, working with Sly Stone on a new version of breakout single 'Dance To The Music'. Elsewhere, funk icon Bootsy Collins will supply some deft bass to 'Hot Fun In The Summertime'.

Containing three unreleased songs, the CD version will also come backed with three club mixes.
