Sir Tom Jones To Be Oldest Male Number One

Welsh singer is 70
Welsh music legend Sir Tom Jones could be set to become the oldest male musician to have a number one album.

Tom Jones is a record breaker already. The singer has enjoyed hits in five decades, and recently returned with a brave new album. 'Praise And Blame' strips back the glitz to give an honest evocation of his influences.

Arriving amidst a label row, the album has enjoyed warm reviews. Produced by Ethan Johns, it finds Tom Jones getting spiritual on a series of covers from artists such as Bob Dylan and John Lee Hooker.

A stark, honest portrayal of an artist entering his 70s 'Praise And Blame' is currently doing battle with Eminem for the number one slot. If he succeeds, Sir Tom Jones will become the oldest male musician to have a UK Number 1 album.

Tom Jones first held the record at the youthful age of 60 when his album 'Loaded' became an enormous success in 1999. Hitting the top spot the singer then had his crowd wrestled from him by Bob Dylan.

The legendary rock poet was 67 when 'Modern Times' hit the top spot, although the Welsh singer could strike back this weekend. Yesterday (June 27th) the official mid-week charts revealed that Tom Jones was just out in front of Eminem.

The American rapper is enjoying huge success with his album 'Recovery', playing a number of massive festival shows in the process.

However Eminem is facing a tough battle with Sir Tom Jones pulling ahead. According to figures from the Official Chart Company the Welsh singer will claim number one position on the album charts if trends continue.

All that could change over the weekend, with vital Saturday shopping sales yet to be taken into account.

"I couldn't be more proud of this album and I'm really blown away by the response from everyone" said Sir Tom Jones. "It's great to be top of the charts with Eminem, maybe next time we could be top together".
