Shonen Knife 30th Anniversary

New album, tour in the works

Legendary Japanese group Shonen Knife are set to celebrate their 30th anniversary this summer.

Three teenage girls in love with The Ramones, Shonen Knife were formed at a time when Japan was not recognised for its music scene. Allowed to work unhindered, the band carefully built up a back catalogue of impeccable punk-pop.

Mixing bubblegum hits from the 60s with chugging bar chords, Shonen Knife hit upon a magic formula. Nirvana once invited them on tour, with Kurt Cobain commenting: “When I finally got to see them live, I was transformed into a hysterical nine-year-old girl at a Beatles concert.”

Becoming the toast of early 90s alt rock, Shonen Knife were invited to record a Peel Session back in 1991. Over the years, the DJ would develop a fascination with the band which became an entry point into wider Japanese musical culture.

Still writing and recording catchy as hell music, Shonen Knife are looking forward to their 30th anniversary.

New album (their 15th, all told) 'Free Time' is set to be released on July 11th, preceded by the double A-side single 'P.Y.O.' / 'Perfect Freedom'. A mixture of joyous bubblegum pop, punk energy and political lyrics the single will boast the psych inspired freakout bonus track 'Evil Birds'.

The album will then be followed by a series of British tour dates. Opening in London's CAMP venue on August 11th, Shonen Knife are also set to play shows in Manchester, Edinburgh and more.

After a quick visit to Ireland the band will then return to the UK for a number of shows finishing on September 11th at London's Scala venue.
