Rolling Stones For Glastonbury?
Bookies name their odds
Legendary British act The Rolling Stones have been installed as the bookies' favourites to headline next year's Glastonbury.
The Rolling Stones don't really do festivals. Even in their youthful days the band preferred one off shows, such as their spectacular Hyde Park performance that turned into an elegy for Brian Jones.
The band closely linked to the events at Altamont in 1969, when the Hells Angels stabbed a concert goer to death during a performance by The Rolling Stones. Since then The Rolling Stones have rarely performed at a festival.
However the group could be set to play Glastonbury next year, if bookmakers are to be believed. Tickets for the 2010 event sold out within 12 hours of going on sale on Sunday (October 4th).
Earlier today (October 6th) organiser Emily Eavis revealed that she was close to confirming a headline for the event, which has sent bookmakers into overdrive.
William Hill spokesman Rupert Adams claimed in a statement that the public seemed convinced that The Rolling Stones were set to be unveiled as headliners. "We have lost a few quid on the headline act for two years running and it will be interesting to see if punters get it right again" he said.
The Rolling Stones have been installed as 4/1 favourites to play the event, closing the ceremony in the traditional Sunday night 'oldies' slot. Coldplay and David Bowie are joint second favourites on 8/1 with both having played the event in recent years.
Intriguingly, Oasis sit at 33/1 with large numbers of fans betting on a re-union show. "Right now the brothers may feel that the split is irreconcilable but in the cold light of day they may change their mind and Glastonbury would be the perfect place for a triumphant return".
Organisers have yet to comment on the rumours.
