Prodigy Hit Radio One's Big Weekend
Rave giants blow a fuse
Rave giants The Prodigy blew into Swindon recently for Radio One's Big Weekend, playing a spectacular headline set.
Sure, nu rave may be on the wane but original rave seems to be alive and kicking. Even though they were releasing mainstream baiting singles when most of the audience were in nappies, The Prodigy were one of the stars of the show at this year's BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend.
With their red hot new album 'Invaders Must Die' a recent memory, the band are on sensational form. Due to headline this summer's Rock Ness, The Prodigy took to the stage at the Swindon based Radio 1's Big Weekend looking like a band on a mission.
However such was the ferocity of the band's set that The Prodigy blew the sound desk. Excessive bass from the group's amps also began setting off car alarms behind the stage, as the sound engineers scrambled to fix the problem.
Returning after a lull of five minutes, vocalist Maxim Reality quipped: "I just wanna say that was nothing to do with us!"
The band finished by running through a string of classics, including 'Out Of Space', 'Voodoo People' and 'Diesel Power' - taken from their recently re-issued albums 'Experience' and 'Music For The Jilted Generation'.
Also on the bill were The Gossip who played an electrifying set which contained tracks from their eagerly anticipated new album 'Music For Men'. Beth Ditto dedicated 'Listen Up' to "any gay lovers in Swindon", and offered to move to the town before singing comeback single 'Heavy Cross'.
Franz Ferdinand performed a solid headline set, with Nick McCarthy appearing on crutches. The guitarist recently broke his foot in America, with a recent video from the bad poking fun at his injury.
Lily Allen introduced her song 'Fuck You' by telling the crowd that she has been informed that she was not allowed to perform the song.
"We've been asked not to play the next song because you're not allowed to say fuck, so maybe you can all say it for us." The singer ended her set with her now-traditional cover of Britney Spears' 'Womanizer'.
