Preview: Last Big Weekend 2014

East End Social comes to a spectacular finish...

Glasgow is an enormously diverse city.

Renowned for its nightlife and cultural exports, much of this attention falls upon the city's West End. This summer, though, the rather more rough-around-the-edges East End was able to step into the limelight.

East End Social brought a series of live events to this part of Glasgow, placing forward-thinking cultural elements within easy reach of those on the ground.

By all reports, it's been an overwhelming success. Coming to a close, organisers have prepared Last Big Weekend – a two day long party in the city's Richmond Park.

Saturday (August 30th) features the likes of The Wedding Present, Honeyblood, Fuck Buttons and what will no doubt be a titanic set from Mogwai.

Sunday (August 31st) meanwhile contains an electronic heavy offering, including sets from Hudson Mohawke, Jeff Mills, James Murphy, renowned crate-diggers Optimo and many more.

Tickets are available HERE but ahead of this Clash asked some of the acts involved to state who they are most looking forward to seeing…

Swervedriver – 'Son Of A Mustang Ford' (as chosen by Stuart Braithwaite – Mogwai)
When I was young and first getting into music the two types of music i mainly liked was 60s psychedelic rock like Jimi Hendrix Experience and the Velvet Underground and the independent rock bands at the time like The Jesus and Mary Chain and Spacemen 3. I think Swervedriver were the first band I heard that were current that were also playing the kind of riffs that Hendrix would play. This song is an absolute beast and was their debut single I think. They were also one only two bands that we ever sent a demo to. The other was The God Machine.

The Wedding Present – 'Suck' (as chosen by James Graham – The Twilight Sad)
We've been fans of The Wedding Present for a long time so we decided to cover "Suck" as a b-side to our single "Seven Years of Letters" from our 2nd album. We found out David Gedge liked the cover and he asked us to play his festival down in Brighton which was really cool. He was a really nice guy and they were amazing as ever at the festival, so we're looking forward to seeing them play at The Lsat Big Weekend" and saying "hi" again.

The Twilight Sad – 'Cold Days From The Birdhouse' (as chosen by Shona – Honeyblood)
I got this album during my first year of university and I'm pretty sure I listened to it nearly every day. It sounded like something completed new to me, and I was absolutely memorised by it.

Honeyblood – 'Killer Bangs' (as chosen by David Gedge – The Wedding Present)
Brilliant title… I wish I'd thought of that. I heard this on BBC Radio 6 Music… it's a great piece of guitarry rock 'n' roll that reminds me of early Delgados.
