Recently profiled in Clash's Next Wave section – read that interview here – London's Pandr Eyez are moving closer to the release of their 'Present' EP, collecting five really rather splendid tracks of punchy R&B production and powerful vocals.
The duo – Ferren Gipson on vocals and Tom Lloyd handling production – already revealed its cover of Mariah Carey's 'Heartbreaker', which features on 'Present'. And now, exclusively to Clash, they've delivered another pre-release treat with 'Don't Hurt 'Em'. Unlike 'Heartbreaker', this is no ballad: this is a straight-up floor-filler, for those keen to swing the hips rather than stamp the feet. A flourish of strings and backing vocals lends the track a little '60s soul vibe, but the sharp-edged beats are very much of the now. There's a heaviness to the percussion here that wouldn't feel out of place on 'Yeezus'.
The bass is balanced quite brilliantly by Gipson's vocals, which can switch from a roar to a whisper, to a rising wave of harmony, without losing a pinch of potency.
'Present' is released as a free(!) download on February 18th. Listen to 'Don't Hurt 'Em' below.
