Premiere: Oddarrang – ‘Admiral Byrd’s Flight’

Finnish group introduce their new album...

Finland's Oddarrang have a tendency towards the grand, towards the monumental.

New album 'Agartha' is named after a mystical realm at the middle of the Earth, and it's dominated by huge riffs, enormous swathes of guitar-driven noise that crash against one another.

Containing a mere five songs, each track feels like a movement in an opera – grand, and taut with feeling.

Clash is able to premiere new cut 'Admiral Byrd's Flight' and it's a bold return. The band's first recording to feature actual, proper lyrics, it's nonetheless one of the most abstract pieces in their catalogue.

The band explain: "'Admiral Byrd's Flight' differs from all the previous Oddarang songs, since it’s the first track ever that features lyrics. I was on tour when I composed it and it started out with a guitar riff I was jamming, while I was backstage, waiting for the soundcheck. First I thought it might be a song better suited for some other project, but after a while it started to feel like an Oddarrang song. It didn’t have lyrics yet though. We recorded the track as an instrumental, but when Olavi came up with the idea of making a concept album about the legend of Agartha, I read the story about Admiral Richard E. Byrd – US Navy pilot who supposedly found the entrance to 'Hollow Earth' on February 19th 1947, while exploring Antarktis – I felt the song needed some lyrics."

Check it out now.

'Agartha' is set to be released on September 23rd.
