Lumped in with baggy, and thereafter Britpop, the reality is that The Charlatans occupy their own universe.
From Hammond soaked Mod soliloquies to country harmonies, electronica-tinged songwriting to anthemic rock the band have continually tread their own path, forged their own identity.
Now they've taken another about turn. Pairing up with the fine individuals at theQuietus, The Charlatans are set to release new single 'So Oh' on December 1st.
To accompany this, the group have hooked up with fellow Quietus alumni Grumbling Fur for a new remix.
The experimental duo have handed the results to Clash. 'Tonal Nargual' (Grumbling Fur Star Liner Aquatic Ape Mix) is a fascinating listen, with one of UK indie's most famous voices being thoroughly de-constructed.
Opening with bubbling synths and fragments of echo chamber electronics, Grumbling Fur then cut up Tim Burgess' voice into tiny shards.
Soothing yet challenging, it's a sign that The Charlatans remain ready to challenge themselves.
Check it out now.
