Benin City are set to release new single 'Wha G'wan' on October 7th.
With the internet now rendering genre lines obsolete, a new breed of musician is making itself heard. Fusing disparate styles into something startlingly new, London trio Benin City are amongst the first to grab our attention.
Shunning any categorisation, the band's output thus far contains the African funk of Highlife blended with the latest electronic squall. Focussing on rhythm, Benin City are also noted for their songcract, with each track being carefully honed, expertly sculpted.
Taking part in Clash cousin night EastnotEast last month, Benin City reduced London venue Birthdays to a heaving mesh of sweaty limbs. Debut album 'Fires In The Park' is out now, and with Autumn beginning to make itself known the trio have decided to unveil a sprightly new single.
'Wha G'wan' opens with sharp, strummed acoustic guitar chords before the band coming rushing in. Dark bass textures underpin Joshua Idehen's voice, while the horns recall TV On The Radio's more soulful excursions.
Out on October 7th via Audio Doughnuts, this is a wonderful introduction (if any were still needed) to one of London's most enticing, exciting new groups.
