Pixar's 'Brave' Teaser Trailer

We're frankly all a flutter about Pixar's upcoming release Brave (previously titled The Bear and the Bow) based on an original story. Just last week the first beautiful stills were released featuring the heroine Merida; the first female lead in this, Pixar's 13th film. The project appears to be a darker and more adult in tone, channelling European folklore and fairytales in the vein of the Brothers Grimm.

All we knew until now was pretty much the above and that it was set in Scotland. Being Scots ourselves, we were concerned about potential casting choices and the curse of the Brigadoon accent. We needn't have worried, there's bone fide Celts voicing the roles, much to our delight.

The enchantingly atmospheric teaser trailer opens on what looks like the ancient stone circle of Callanish, with our flame haired heroine riding through an earthy, misty landscape on an enormous Clydesdale horse (did we see fairies?) before taking down an enormous bear with a bow and arrow. We are in love already.

Read the synopsis and watch the trailer below:

Since ancient times, stories of epic battles and mystical legends have been passed through the generations across the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland. In Brave, a new tale joins the lore when the courageous Merida (Kelly Macdonald) confronts tradition, destiny and the fiercest of beasts. Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus (Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (Robbie Coltrane). Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric old Witch (Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late.

The film is scheduled for release on June 22, 2012.
