Pete Doherty Takes To Stage With Hero
Plays gig with Lee Mavers
Indie icon Pete Doherty has played a show with one of his heroes, former La's songwriter Lee Mavers.
Mavers is one of the most influential, if reclusive, geniuses of British indie. The Liverpool musician helped form The La's before becoming the main creative force in the band. Their career was stalled by record label rows, and Mavers notorious approach to recording.
At one point in the lengthy recording sessions for their self-titled debut album Mavers stormed out, demanding a mixing desk with genuine 60s dust on it. The resultant record is a scratchy, at times unfinished affair which nonetheless brims with Mavers stunning songwriting.
Since the album was released Mavers has rarely ventured onto the live circuit. The La's reformed in 2005 for a brief tour, but since then the songwriter has rarely played live.
During a solo Doherty concert in Birmingham Academy Lee Mavers took to the stage to play a rendition of The La's classic 'Son Of A Gun'. The pair released a video last year of them jamming in Doherty's flat, sparking rumours of a collaboration.
For the song Mavers was joined by Doherty's solo band, who include his Babyshambles' bandmates Drew McConnell and Adam Ficek, Blur's Graham Coxon and producer Stephen Street.
Mavers returned to the stage for a performance of The La's song 'There She Goes'.
Pete Doherty is set to perform live on Friday Night With Jonathan Ross tomorrow (March 27th).
