Pete Doherty On Media

Tabloids invent "evil" persona

Former Babyshambles frontman turned solo troubadour Pete Doherty has claimed the media has invented an "evil" caricature of him.

From the messy collapse of The Libertines onwards, the British media seem to have taken a perverse delight in cataloguing the life of Pete Doherty. His drug busts and spells in prison have brought with them a mountain of headlines, while a romance with model Kate Moss made him a bona fide celebrity.

However Doherty has claimed to find the attention disconcerting. Even in his early days the singer would write lyrics such as "you're like a journalist, you cut and paste and twist" and it seems his opinion has only hardened.

In an interview with ITV's 'London Tonight' on March 20th the singer claimed he didn't recognise the figure portrayed in the press.

"I don't really see it as me in a way," he said. "It's like this media creation."

Doherty went on to call this media character "evil" saying "I call him my evil twin, this fella they've (the media) created. He looks a little bit like me, apart from he's filthy and he's always pulling a weird expression, or doing something violent or illegal."

"I'd like to meet him…actually I dunno if I would like to meet him. Maybe, just briefly. Can you arrange it?!"

Pete Doherty is currently touring the UK promoting material from his debut solo album 'Grace/Wastelands'. Influenced by folk styles, the album was produced by Stephen Street and features contributions form Blur axe slinger Graham Coxon.
