Mammoth Seattle grunge veterans Pearl Jam are about to head back into the studio to being work on their ninth studio album.

Centred on frontman Eddie Vedder, Pearl Jam are an American rock institution. The group were at the forefront of the grunge explosion, yet have managed to sustain both popularity and artistic credibility for two decades now.

The band previously indicated a desire to self-release their new album, side-stepping label politics. There are no details of how the album will be released out-with the United States.

In a new interview with US magazine Rolling Stone singer Eddie Vedder said "the new record feels good so far — really strong and uptempo, stuff we can sink our teeth into".

The new album will re-unite the group with long term producer Brendan O'Brien - the two parties have not worked together since 1998's album 'Yield'.

Pearl Jam are set to re-issue their 1991 debut album 'Ten' on March 23rd.
