Paul McCartney Election Protest
Former Beatle refuses to vote
Former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney has made a one man protest about the ongoing MP expenses scandal by refusing to vote in the recent European Elections.
With our banks leaking money faster than the government to cram it back in, the last thing the public needed to hear was that our elected representatives are ripping us off. Yet in a series of newspaper revelations it has been revealed that MPs in the House Of Commons can bend the rules like so much elastic.
Moats, second homes, gold enamelled drain covers - our MPs have claimed for the lot. With heads set to roll over parliament way, Sir Paul McCartney has entered the fray and revealed that he recently issued a one man protest.
The former Beatle claims in a new interview that he is "disillusioned" with British politics following a series of revelations over the widespread abuse of the taxpayer funded expense accounts.
"I didn't vote in the last election," he told the Independent. "All that expenses rubbish has made me disillusioned with British politics."
He added: "I didn't feel comfortable using my vote to get any of them in power. All of them seem to be up for ripping off expenses and making themselves as powerful as possible and I don't want a part of that."
It seems that many people felt the same way as the Beatles legend. Turn out in the European elections was extremely low, allowing extreme parties such as the BNP to sneak in through the back door.
See, Sir Paul? Not such as good idea after all. Kasabian's Serge Pizzorno recently blasted MPs, but was also keen to see the funny side. Don't expect political themes to dominate their new album 'West Rider Pauper Asylum' though.
Sir Paul McCartney has always had a political side. While the songwriter is perhaps best known for being less active than his Beatles counterpart John Lennon, he did record the savage protest song 'Give Ireland Back To The Irish'.
Recently the songwriter has been linked with a possible collaboration with Bob Dylan. Pairing two titanic musical talents, any potential team up could well make music geeks heads explode. A word of warning however - McCartney and Stevie Wonder once wrote a song together and look how that turned out.
Bizarrely, in the same interview the Liverpool musician also claimed he wanted to make electronic music and cited MGMT as possible collaborators. The songwriter recently released 'Electric Arguments' with his project The Fireman, which included many electronic elements.
