One of British music's most popular and enduring partnerships could be at an end with the news that Noel Gallagher has quit Oasis.

The Manchester group formed in 1991, with the band following in the wake of The Stone Roses. However Oasis soon found their stride, and their own sound with Noel Gallagher emerging as the dominant songwriting force.

However relations between Noel and his younger brother Liam Gallagher have never been easy. Both have previously walked out of the band, with one reconciliation sparking one of the group's finest moments - fan favourite 'Acquiesce'.

But it seems as if the story could be at an end. Recently Oasis pulled out of V Festival, having played one of their two scheduled dates. The official reason was singer Liam Gallagher coming down with laryngitis, but behind the scenes rumours were brewing of tension within the band.

Recently Noel Gallagher had spoken of writing a solo album, with brother Liam launching his recent Pretty Green clothing range with his own stab at songwriting.

Tension appears to have been mounting between the two, with the brothers apparently coming to blows just moments before they were due to go on stage at Rock En Seine festival in Paris.

Instead of Oasis appearing a sign simply read: "As a result of an altercation within the band, the Oasis gig has been cancelled."

Soon after a statement from Noel Gallagher appeared on the group's official site. In it, Noel explains that: "It's with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight. People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer."

Somewhat bizarrely, cherubic Scottish singer Amy MacDonald witnessed a row between the brothers backstage. In a Twitter message she claimed: "Oasis cancelled again with one minute to stage time!!! Liam smashesd noels guitar, huuuge fight!"

Later she Tweets: "I have never heard such loud booing!! Was terrifying!" before adding "Noels quit :-(".

However the singer later admitted that "Was told by promoter about guitar smashing incident. I wasnt there before you get carried away."

There has been no official announcement on the future of Oasis.
