Notting Hill Carnival 2014 Party Guide

The best events across London...

Europe’s largest street party, the Notting Hill Carnival has grown from a local community-based affair into something with an international reputation.

Extending far beyond Ladbroke Grove, Carnival flavours seep into every aspect of London life. With the Bank Holiday Weekend now upon up, Clash picks five of the both pre/post Carnival parties…

NTS X Red Stripe Carnival Afterparty – KPH – Ladbroke Grove (Sunday)
Anyone who caught the #SixtyMinutesLive recently on BBC 1Xtra with Dizzee and a selection of grime's finest will have seen what a don General Levy is and continues to be, spitting actual white hot heat. So why not take your goat-filled self on down to the NTS X Red Stripe afterparty, where he'll be alongside ruffneck selections from Slackk, Just Jam, Martelo, Radi Dadi, a garage set from Slimzee, and many more. Get your firmest, flattest shoes at the ready… (Felicity Martin)

Hipsters don't Dance X Swing Ting Present World Carnival – Birthdays, Dalston (Sunday)
Pack a couple of street beers in your rucksack and make the trek eastbound to Birthdays in Dalston, who'll be keeping the carnival fever alive on Sunday night. Manchester party starters Swing Ting are joining forces with bashment / dancehall crew Hipsters Don't Dance, and bringing along some of their pals in the form of Murlo, Trigganom, Famous Eno, and MC Fox. Expect tropical grime, dancehall, soca and tidal waves of low frequencies. (Felicity Martin)

Hot Wuk Truck Party – Koko, Camden (Saturday)
Helmed by none other than bashment crew The Heatwave, the Hot Wuk Truck Party takes all the prime elements of Carnival flavour and floods them into one of London’s finest – and most historic – venues. Expect plenty of guest appearances running the gamut between jungle, drum ‘n’ bass, soca, digital dancehall and lots, lots more.

Pineapple Jam – Canavan’s, Peckham (Saturday)
A hotbed of Afro-Caribbean culture, the SE postcode might not be walking distance from Notting Hill but it is most certainly a cousin community. Canavan’s has rapidly established itself as a hotspot, with Master K, Leonidas and more guiding you through a low key, laid back tropical journey.

Jamm Carnival Clash – Brixton (Sunday)
Extending its tendrils far beyond West London, Carnival has become a truly city wide affair. Brixton Jamm will resound the sounds of Gold Teeth DJs, who will be joined by Overproof and About To Blow. Expect lashing of bass culture, with plenty of rum punch and jerk BBQ to see you through to Bank Holiday Monday.

…and not technically a Carnival event…

Jamz – Alibi, Dalston (Saturday)
Run by Butterz pairing Elijah and Skilliam, Jamz is one of London’s most sought after grime parties. Free entry in an atmospheric basement venue, this instalment coincides with Skilliam’s birthday – so you just know it’s going to go off.
