No Age On Recording
Exclusive: Noise pop duo talk to ClashMusic
Los Angeles noise pop duo No Age have spoken exclusively to ClashMusic about their strictly lo-fi production techniques.
When the most popular recording technique in modern music is autotune then you know that something, somewhere has gone very seriously wrong.
Correcting duff notes - why would you bother? One group who reject these techniques in favour of something with more heart are No Age, who recently spoke to ClashMusic ahead of the release of their new EP 'Losing Feeling'.
A ferocious blast of energy, the new release holds four tracks yet is over in just six minutes. Brief, perhaps, but effective as No Age seem to thrive on making their point and then moving on.
Dean Spunt from the noise pop duo explained that their inventive recording methods weren't part of a masterplan. "It actually isn't intentional really. I think when you write a song you need to think about the relation to the recording as well" he explains.
"Some things sound great loud and bright and in your face, and some things sound better under muck and scratchy. Each song sort of tells us by them time it is time to record what the production type should be, and most take the real shape in mixing where we often change complete parts and insert other parts and flip everything around until it sounds right. But I guess in general, most pop music today has horrible production."
No Age also cited seminal Californian punk stable SST as an inspiration. "I mean, SST was a way of life, it took "punk" to a whole new level" Spunt explained.
"The bands that they ended up putting out were so radical and different from each other which is always great".
No Age are set to release their new EP 'Losing Feelings' on October 5th. Watch out for a full interview with the band next week!
