The ever evolving indie rock collective Broken Social Scene have begun work on their much anticipated fourth album.

As far as music pedigree goes, up until recently Canada couldn't boast much more than Celine Dion. Sure, Neil Young and Leonard Cohen both hail from the country but their careers were incubated in the hot house environments of California and New York.

However the career of Broken Social Scene, and their myriad of spin offs and side projects, has transformed Canada into a hotbed of thought provoking indie music. The band's label Arts And Crafts are one of the most respected on the planet, releasing celebrated albums by the likes of Stars and establishing connections with groups such as Los Campesinos!.

In a new blog entry Kevin Drew reveals that the band have begun work on their first studio album since 2005's self-titled effort.

"We are in Chicago - Soma studio to be precise. I am happy to announce we have started recording our first record in four years and decided to do it with the one and only John McEntire. We did a one-day session with John last October and it was a perfect fit."

"This plan has been in the works for nine months and it has all come together quite sweetly in the moments leading up to being here…he is a hero of ours when it comes to recordings so it seems very balanced that we are here."

"To be here is a departure for us since our two previous records have been made by David Newfeld...He just finished making the new most serene republic record and is now busy working with our friends from México city, the very excellent chikita violenta. He is a very busy man at the moment but we have discussed plans for the future...."

In other news, a new book has been launched on Broken Social Scene. Drew describes the book by saying it "covers the musical years in our city leading up to us getting together, the You Forgot It in People days, and the days after. It consists of interviews with the band, friends, local promoters and musicians."

Broken Social Scene had been planning to launch a new festival in Toronto, but this has been cancelled due to noise issues from a nearby race car event.

Kevin Drew finishes his message by saying: "Also watch out for this twitter shit that has become the new thing these days...if instant communication keeps going like this we’ll have to all find our own personal shaman to help remind us how to live and there is not enough of them on this planet for all of us....."

Broken Social Scene are due to release their new album next year.
