Morrissey Festival Controversy
Singer storms offstage
Indie legend Morrissey has caused a row with the organisers of Coachella festival after walking offstage due to the smell from nearby burger stalls.
Morrissey lived in California for some time, and the homecoming was eagerly awaited by fans. Coachella has attempted to engineer a Smiths re-union for the event, but after being rebuffed settled for a solo set from the Mancunian star.
The singer performed in front of an enormous black-and-white photograph of the naked torso of a sailor smoking a cigar with the word 'Refusal' written across his chest - a reference to Morrissey's recent album 'Years Of Refusal'. Morrissey played a greatest hits set, including some old Smiths favourites alongside new material.
Opening with 'This Charming Man' Morrissey then plunged into 'Girlfriend In A Coma' before humbly asking the audience "does it sound OK?".
However midway through the set the singer seemed troubled, saying "I can smell burning flesh and I hope to God it's human". The smell from nearby food stalls was wafting through the air onstage, troubling the renowned vegetarian.
Morrissey is very outspoken in his belief in animal rights, frequently praising the work of the PETA organisation.
The singer then shocked fans by walking offstage during the middle of 'Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others' from the Smiths' album 'The Queen Is Dead'. Morrissey them emerged shortly afterwards saying "the smell of burning animals is making me sick. I just couldn't bear it."
Morrissey then continued performing, mixing recent single 'I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris' with classic material. Ending with "How Soon Is Now?' the singer showed no signs of fatigue in the extreme heat.
