MIchael Eavis Gains Green Award
Glastonbury Founder Recognised
The founder of Glastonbury festival and all round top bloke Michael Eavis has received an early Christmas present with the news that he is to be honoured with a Green World Award, it has been reported.
The founder of the legendary festival will be honoured at the MIDEM international music market in Cannes, France - a very long way from his home on Worthy Farm in Somerset.
The event runs from January 18th - 21st, and Eavis will receive his award on January 19th. The Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts was founded in 1970, and this year's event attracted 137,500 music lovers. The event supports several major charities, and has been involved for decades with green organisations.
Eavis' initiatives include waste recycling; using biofuels; sourcing power from renewable energy sources such as solar and wind; employing Forest Stewardship Council-certified wood; distributing biodegradable disposable plates and cups, wooden cutlery and biodegradable tent pegs; running campaigns to raise awareness among festival-goers; organising schemes to promote car-sharing and collective means of transportation; and organizing sanctuaries for local wildlife during the event.
Phew! Makes you wonder where he found the time to organise the festival!
Michael Eavis will receive his Green World Award on January 19th.
