The shortlist for the Nationwide Mercury Music Prize has been unveiled, and as usual there a host of surprises on there.
Dominated by indie music, the list also reflects a great year for British female talent with Adele, Estelle and Laura Marling all up for a prize. Controversially, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss have been nominated for "Raising Sand" - despite the fact that Krauss is American. The previous nomination of Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan drew criticism from some quarters, who viewed it as a dilution of the award's commitment to British music.
Elsewhere on the list, Radiohead have been nominated for "In Rainbows" and dubstep guru Burial makes the grade with his "Untrue" LP. Radiohead's iconic "OK Computer" album was beaten to the prize by Roni Size in 1998 - could lightening strike twice with the latest urban sensation?
Some of the notable artists who didn't make the list include Portishead, Duffy, Kate Nash, Lightspeed Champion and Coldplay.
Of course, it bears no resemblance to the list we created yesterday (view here) but then ours is much better. Plus we got the token jazz entry (Portico Quartet) right, didn't we?
The shortlist for the Mercury Music Prize runs as follows:
Adele - 19
British Sea Power - Do You Like Rock Music?
Burial - Untrue
Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid
Estelle - Shine
Laura Marling - Alas I Cannot Swim
Neon Neon - Stainless Style
Portico Quartet Knee - Deep In The North Sea
Rachel Unthank & The Winterset - The Bairns
Radiohead - In Rainbows
Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - Raising Sand
The Last Shadow Puppets - The Age Of The Understatement
