Mani Claims Stone Roses Could Reform
Here we go again...
The music world's most protracted re-union could well be on again with Mani claiming The Stone Roses could reform.
The Stone Roses formed in Manchester in the mid 80s. After a dodgy goth period best forgotten the band began crafting a blend of funk, soul, rock and psychedelia, inadvertently inventing baggy in the process.
Guitarist John Squire left the band in 1995, shortly before they ultimately imploded with a heart breaking performance at Reading festival. Frontman Ian Brown went on to enjoy a fruitful solo career, while bass player Mani is now a full time member of Primal Scream - whose 'Velocity Girl' once inspired the Stone Roses' classic 'Made Of Stone'.
The band's self-titled debut album was released in 1989, turning a very ripe 20 years old earlier this year. Clash Magazine honoured this anniversary by giving The Stone Roses an in depth cover feature, with rumours mounting that the band would reform.
The Stone Roses re-issued their debut album earlier this year in a variety of formats - including an inventive lemon shaped USB stick. Still as thrilling as the day it was recorded, the album has inspired new musicians for two decades.
Now a dedicated artist John Squire quashed any rumours about the band reforming in fine style earlier this year.
Creating a massive artwork, John Squire stated his intentions never to reform the legendary group. Fans were devastated, but in a new interview bass player Mani reveals that he believes the band would reform is enough money was on offer.
"Ian and John have to get it sorted out and take it from there," Mani told The Sun.
"For all the morals and principles that people have, you wave fucking £20m in front of somebody and they change their mind. You'll see how their philosophies soon change."
However the bassist revealed that he is not too hung up on the idea of the band reforming. "If it doesn't happen, it's no skin off my nose as I'm in Primal Scream and having the time of my life."
John Squire has yet to respond, though we can't imagine he would pleased to be asked his opinion on this.
