Madonna Prepares Wallis Simpson Biopic
Directorial venture due
Madonna is to direct a new film based on the relationship between Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII.
The relationship between Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII resulted in one of most iconic moments in recent British history. Unable to accept a twice divorced American as their Queen, parliament applied sufficient pressure to make the King abdicate from his throne.
Curiously, there are two alternative histories derived from these events. In the United States, Wallis Simpson is remembered more as a tragic lover trapped in the archaic system known as the United Kingdom.
In this country, though, King Edward VIII is remembered more for his appalling political views and his overwhelming arrogance towards a democratically parliament.
Stepping into the fray, Madonna is set to direct a feature film based on their relationship. 'W.E' is almost complete, and is set to premiere in the United States this December - prime season for gaining an Oscar nod.
Not Madonna's first foray behind the camera, this is perhaps her most high profile venture into the world of directing.
Speaking to press in the United States, legendary Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein talked up the film. "Madonna beautifully interweaves past and present in W.E. It's a very smart film, and a stunning feature directorial debut," Weinstein said. "I'm incredibly excited about this movie and I wanted to give it a prominent release date."
The new film of course follows the spectacular success of 'The King's Speech' last year. The new work contains many of the same characters, although it was naturally have a different slant on those iconic events.
Produced through The Weinstein Company, 'W.E.' will follow in the footsteps of notable Oscar winners such as 'Shakespeare In Love' and 'The English Patient'.
However detractors are already emerging. Reports in the Daily Mail from 'a spy' indicate that Harry Weinstein has begun to doubt the potential of the film after a poorly received screening in New York.
'W.E.' is due to premiere in December.
