Lonelady Speaks Out
Newcomer slates music scene
Warp endorsed newcomer Lonelady has slated the modern music scene, labelling it 'vacuous'.
Hailing from Manchester, Julie Campbell is a one woman band. A musical machine, the artist turned musician has been cranking out demos from her flat for some time now, honing her technique as she does so.
Gaining the attention of Warp Records last year, Lonelady signed to the legendary imprint and began preparing her debut album. 'Nerve Up' is a collection of material written over the course of years, yet retains an addictive cohesive nature.
Recalling the post-punk scene with its jittery guitar lines, Lonelady's debut album recalls a past, deeper, era. Speaking to ClashMusic, Campbell had little positive to say about today's music scene.
“Much of contemporary music, and the machine around it to me seems vacuous, lacking in magic,” she admitted.
“There is no Tube or Top Of The Pops, and the act or art of buying records has been corroded by the download market. I’m not against technology as such, but the golden era is lost, for now. I’m just trying to do something that means something; it’s a private motivation, not a business plan.”
Continuing, Lonelady revealed that she sees a crossover between her art and her music. “For as long as I can remember I wanted to be an artist, a painter in particular,” said Campbell.
“I don’t see making music as being that different from making art; I see sounds, to an extent. Studying art has opened boundaries for me, of different ways of seeing and thinking, of being inventive.”
